Statistics tell us that one in five adults will experience a mental health problem each year. And that’s only counting the people who are diagnosed. This alone should be reason enough that more people should be enrolling in a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course.
Mental health problems can come in many different forms, from mild to severe, and MHFA teaches people how to recognise the signs of a mental health issue and help someone who may need assistance. It also equips people with the knowledge and skills to provide the necessary support and guidance in times of mental distress.
There is not enough mental health literacy or support in the Australian community to help pick-up on people experiencing mental health problems. This is where Mental Health First training will help.
Unlike physical first aid, there doesn’t tend to be one right way to have a conversation with someone about their mental health.
You might need to slowly approach the subject. You might get it wrong, and they really are fine. Or you might need to have a conversation repeatedly before they’re ready to open up to you.
The Director of research and curriculum with Mental Health First Aid Australia, Claire Kelly, says there’s evidence this conversation training in courses is working. With almost 20 years of research now behind mental health first aid, the data is undoubtedly showing that it is making a difference.
“It improves people’s skills, it improves their confidence in having these conversations, it improves recognition of potential problems, and it is making a profound difference in people’s lives.”

Important to remember
The most important to remember is that mental health first aid teaches you that the worst thing that could happen is being a little embarrassed. But if there’s a chance that you can help someone who is struggling, the potential reward far outweighs any potential discomfort or awkwardness.
Knowing mental health first aid could make all the difference in providing help and support to those who need it most. Therefore, mental health first aid is an invaluable tool for everyone.
